122nd Durham Miners Gala and Big Meeting:
Only the Working Class Can Save the Day!

As the thousands of working people from all across the region take part in the march of banners and the big meeting it is worth reflecting on the significance of this fighting tradition of the working class of the northern region. In the past it was spearheaded by the miners and today it is the workers from all industries and public services taking part. Today, as yesterday the Gala reflects the truth that it is only the working class that can save the day from the huge crisis that has befallen society at the hands of big party politicians and the big global corporations that are calling the shots.

Abroad, the only solution that they have is the conquest of markets through plunder and genocidal war. The "war on terror" is the latest barbaric war where the Anglo- US imperialists have bombed and killed hundreds of thousands of people in Afghanistan and Iraq and where they continue to threaten Iran, Syria and north Korea, countries that present no terror threat but wish to pursue an independent path from Anglo-US interests.

At home, their only solution is the broad assault on the rights of the people by waging psychological propaganda warfare on the "terror threat" to justify the attacks on the rights of the peoples and to criminalise individuals and whole communities on the say so of the state. This, at the same time that the anti-social offensive against the rights of the workers to public services, social investment and pensions is being waged by the government on behalf of the monopolies to turn these services into a new source of massive profits for them at the expense of the rights of the people.

In this situation the working class movement must bring forward from the past what is purest and join with its youth, its women and all nationalities to take a lead in building society anew. The working class has to put its stamp on society and unite the people as one around its programme to vest sovereignty in the people, guarantee the rights of all in law, establish a sovereign economy that stops paying the rich, invests in social programmes and meets the claims of the people on society. It must establish a government which bases its foreign policy on resolving international conflicts through peaceful means, no longer deploying troops on foreign soil and end its intervention in the internal affairs of other countries.
