This year International Women’s Day, March 8, is being celebrated when the clouds of war are gathering and when humanity is rising to oppose the war and to demand political renewal. International Women’s Day this year is therefore underlining that women are in the forefront of the struggle of humanity for the rights of all, against reaction and for social progress. They participate in this struggle together with all collectives of the people in defence of their rights and the rights of all, and are in the vanguard of the humanity’s struggle, shoulder to shoulder with the youth, with workers and with all who are becoming politicised to take up the fight for a principled solution to the question of rights.

It must be said that it is women who are continuing to bear the brunt of the anti-social offensive carried out against the people’s well-being. It is women therefore that are especially concerned to bring the alternative into being, and to rally round the programme of the working class to transform society to a socialist society, so that humanity may be emancipated and the people become the decision-makers. The society which they are striving to bring into being is one which recognises the claims of all its members as of right, and in which the demands of the rich and powerful that the maximising of capitalist profit globally are what should govern society are totally discounted.

At the same time, as women bear the brunt of the anti-social offensive, they are fighting right now that PFI, privatisation and the wrecking of social programmes be ended and opposed with a pro-social programme and an anti-war government. They are recognising that society must be changed to end the situation where they are treated as second and third class citizens, in which violence against women is the most major scandal. They are affirming their worth, discussing women’s role in transforming society and activising themselves to bring about this transformation, and to realise their right to the initiative.

Far from the situation of women improving in Britain and world-wide, it is the neo-liberal agenda and programme of globalisation the capitalist and imperialist powers that is causing further devastation for them, for their children and for society. It is, for example, widely recognised that it is women and children that will suffer the most in an impending war, and that because of the devastation caused world-wide by the growing gap between the rich and the poor, women and children and other vulnerable sections are subjected to unbearable burdens.

On this occasion of International Women’s Day, 2003, WDIE pays tribute to all women throughout the world fighting to affirm their rights and the rights of all, and are standing up in the front ranks of those fighting for peace, social progress and a different future for all humanity.

The gender pay gap in Britain currently stands at 19%, which means that women who work full time are paid on average just 81% of men's hourly earnings.

The government is saying that the problem facing women today is to successfully strike a balance between work and family life. However, it is society which is to blame for the gender differences and women must not be left to take the blame for "not succeeding" in the work/life balance.

Furthermore, an ever greater body of evidence is amassing showing privatisation, whether PFI, PPP or competitive tendering, is widening the pay gap further. Women and children are the biggest users of public services and women are also the vast majority of public servants, concentrated in the lower level of pay. Whether in local government, health or the civil service, the so called soft service areas of catering, cleaning and caring are where workers are most often transferred to the private sector and profits earned off their backs.

On International Women's Day women in over 70 countries will participate in the Global Women’s Strike, taking action against the war in Iraq and the killing economic priorities to pay for it.

Our survival is not their economic priority, so our survival work is invisible.
Women are the first carers, for people and for the planet.
We do 2/3 of the world's work, mostly unwaged caring work.
We and our children pay most for war and weapons. We are 70% of victims of armed conflict, 80% of refugees and displaced people. 500,000 children have died in Iraq as a result of sanctions. 1.5m infants die from malnutrition each year.

Everywhere women struggle to make up for the suffering & devastation, and for the loss of benefits, healthcare, education . . . cut or privatised to pay for war.
- 900+ billion spent on military budgets worldwide.
- £4 million a week on UK bombing of Iraq.
- £3.5+ billion put aside by the UK for all-out war.

Yet there's no money to pipe clean water or for food security - No money for breastfeeding mothers & infants - No money for single mothers, disability benefits, pensioners, students - No money for asylum seekers who flee rape & other torture imposed by Western-supported dictators - No money for decentpay for fire service workers, teachers, hospital staff . . .$80 billion would get rid of the world's worst poverty

Every need we have is "unaffordable".
Killing people is the priority for which we're all doing without.

We say YES to every non-violent means of disarming Iraq of all weapons of mass destruction.

History shows that the disarmament process is painfully slow, and all to often reaches a standstill, as witnessed at this time in the Conference on Disarmament and other disarmament negotiating forums.

There is no convincing evidence of any alarming developments in Iraq that threaten the security of its neighbours or of anyone else. There is therefore no justification for taking military action against Iraq. A decision by the Security Council or by any of its members to go to war against this country, impoverished and weakened by years of sanctions against its citizens, can only be seen by people everywhere as criminal.

We should not have to, but we will remind you all that the prime responsibility of the United Nations is the maintenance and building of international peace.

We commend all those of you who have stood firm so far on using every diplomatic and political means to resolve the current crisis over Iraq and call on you to continue in your endeavours.

We call on those of you who are spending billions on the military build-up near and far from the borders of Iraq to stop and disengage. There is no justification for sending to death soldiers and civilians an every side. We call on you all to use reason and give all the needed time to ensure the disarmament of Iraq. We then urge you to work strenuously to achieve general and complete disarmament for the safety of all peoples.

· AND A DAY OF STRUGGLE TO AVERT US-LED WAR AGAINST IRAQ

The observance of the International Women’s Day in the third year of the Third Millennium takes place in the grim background of an impending war of destruction unleashed by the United States on Iraq, destabilising peace and security of the workers and peoples in the Gulf, the Middle-East region and all over the world.

While all the lofty aims and programmes outlined by the United Nations Millennium Goals and, in particular, the implementation of the Programme of Actions adopted by the World Conference on Women held in Beijing and the Copenhagen Summit on Social Development, are sidelined, sabotaged and ignored on the plea of shortage of resources, the US-led war on Iraq will cost over one thousand billion dollars – a reckless and inhuman squandering of the scarce resources so urgently needed to lift millions out of poverty and destitution.

The continued recession and crisis which affects most countries have already led to a significant increase in unemployment and under-employment. These are accompanied by a further aggravation of unemployment of women as well as an aggravation of the unequal treatment and discrimination against women. The growing trade union struggles all over the world against privatisation, liberalisation and other neo-liberal policies draw attention to the further worsening of all economic and social problems caused by the policies of "neo-liberal globalisation" in all continents, particularly affecting women and children.

It is therefore extremely urgent that the United Nations and the international community act decisively to stop the wanton destruction of resources for human development and social progress through the super-imperialist war plans threatening our planet today.

On International Women’s Day this year, women of the world declare along with the trade unions that all countries should respect the UN Charter and the decisions unanimously adopted in the UN Summits in Copenhagen and Beijing on social development and particularly to eliminate the unfair and unequal treatment of women workers.

The WFTU has repeatedly drawn international attention to the deplorable fact that millions of women and their families continue to live in extreme insecurity and poverty especially in countries affected by conditions of war, military occupation and civil conflicts. In need of urgent international solidarity are the women and children who are victims of the genocidal policies of Israel in the occupied Palestinian and other Arab territories as well as who are the victims of economic blockades against their countries. Many women trade unionists and social activists are victims of the brutal violation of human rights and trade union rights as in Colombia and other countries with repressive regimes.

The WFTU reiterates its complete solidarity with the struggle of all women workers and trade unions, bravely fighting against discrimination and injustices and for the implementation of the conventions and all labour standards set by the ILO, for the implementation of the Programme of Action of the UN Conference on Women held in Beijing in 1995, as well as against sexual harassment and violence against women.

The WFTU reiterates its total solidarity with this struggle for a better life and for just demands and for peace and security for all peoples. On this International Women’s Day, the WFTU appeals to trade unions in all countries to further strengthen their united struggles:

· for the total elimination of all forms of discrimination against women, particularly in relation to recruitment, wages, promotion, social security, pensions and participation in management;

· for adequate protection for women engaged in agriculture, handicrafts and in the informal sector, and those working in Export Processing Zones and other places of employment where protective legislation does not apply;

· to reinforce their efforts to support the women workers’ right of association and adequate representation for women in all elected institutions, including the leading bodies of trade unions;

· to uphold their rights as workers and mothers, for the protection of motherhood, upholding family links and relations;

· for peace and security in the world, through disarmament for development; and

· to build a bright future for the children and their families and for social progress.

Bay Area California USA

Saturday, March 8th Illuminated Peace Sign for International Women's Day - we are asking women in the Bay Area to join us on the Marin Headlands to form a giant illuminated peace symbol.  The location is Battery Spencer just above the northern end of the Golden Gate Bridge.   It's the first destination after entering the Marin Headlands west of the bridge.  There is a large paved area on a slight slant which looks back to the bridge and San Francisco where we can form a circle about 100' in diameter.  5:30.  We can get organized while it is still light and sunset is about 6:15.  There is some parking along the road - carpooling is recommended.  You can also come by bus.  The buses can't park there, but they can drop off passengers and go park at the visitors' center.  What you'll need is a strong flashlight (with brand new batteries) and warm clothing.  Also, because the area is not as sloped as we'd like, we're asking you to bring a one or two step stool.  The people at the top of the symbol need to be elevated a little in order for the symbol to be seen well from the bridge.  All the places that had the perfect slope were revegetation areas and off limits.  We are hoping that this idea catches on and women in other areas will follow suit.  This is the action for those who want to keep their clothes on - as a matter of fact, it's for those who want to bundle up!

Women have camped at the airport to prevent the use of this civilian airport for refuelling and restocking US military planes bound for Iraq. Under the constitution which declares Ireland to be a neutral country, this is illegal. Protesters have attacked the planes, and due to this direct action and other forms of protest, in many of which the Strike participated, three airlines have pulled out for "security reasons"! *** Women from Shannon town will be joining. 1. Saturday 8 March GLOBAL WOMEN'S STRIKE Women will strike for 3 hours from unwaged housework and family care, asking men to support them by doing the housework and childcare in their place. A march will bring together women of African and Indian descent, Amerindian and mixed race women to protest the war in Iraq and the racial violence in Guyana: "We are tired ... of the work of coping with an unending fear of physical violence and threat of violence. Tired of the work of holding our families and communities together or if we can’t, of moving and re-settling them. We are tired of the wars inside Guyana..." They’re also demanding lower electricity prices.

India

Saturday 8 March GLOBAL WOMEN'S STRIKE RAIPUR FFDA holding a workshop on the status of women in relation to unwaged work where tribal women leaders will speak. *** The General Secretary of CWWC-INTUC, writes: "We do support each other to make the world understand that we are the creators of the world and not the destructors. Stop the wars for whatever reason, invest those entire resources for nourishing and caring for human beings. Let us join together!"

March 3rd - 7th  Bat Shalom And The Jerusalem Center For Women have chosen to commemorate the week of International Women's Day 2003 by coordinating delegations of Palestinian and Israeli women to meet with foreign diplomatic embassies and missions in Tel Aviv, Ramallah and Jerusalem.  We will be presenting the ambassadors, consul generals and official representatives with our joint declaration on transfer and will also be raising the issue of protection for the Palestinian people against the aggravated threat to their collective existence.  We are requesting brief meetings (fifteen minutes to half an hour) for the mornings and afternoons of Monday - Friday, March 3rd - 7th.  If you are interested in participating in a delegation, please let us know which day you are available.  Coordination of the delegations begins .next week, and we will notify you regarding your assignment, as well as when the preparation workshop will be held.  We hope that you will choose to commemorate International Women's Day with us again this year!  Yours in Peace, Bat Shalom

Saturday 8 March GLOBAL WOMEN'S STRIKE Kaabong Women’s Group (KWG), which has co-ordinated the Strike each year, is mobilizing in villages throughout the region. *** In preparation for 8 March the KWG Drama Group is putting on free plays, exhibitions, concerts, songs and crafts work. They say, "War, War, War, we have suffered all types of Wars, not even a decade elapses without wars. Innocent hungry women and children killed, pregnant women and innocent babies ... In Uganda more weapons are being bought for modernization instead of essentials. We do work endlessly caring for families, bearing children on empty stomachs. Drought has caused a lot of suffering especially to breast-feeding mothers, the aged, the disabled and infants, and instead money which would have made our life easier is put on military budget ... Our survival is not their economic priority, so our survival work is invisible. We are still proud to announce that one of our demands was met by the Ugandan government through abolishing cost sharing [charges] in hospitals." * The Federation of Uganda Women Business Organisations, Industry & Agriculture will participate with a "demonstration of indigence, windowed brought in by the continuous wars, disabled economy & persons physically, sale of all our national assets through privatisation, liberalisation to abuse the poor." They demand that "the government returns the Farmers House to farmers of which women comprise 85% ... Women need agricultural implements & peace from government not assiduous wars and the collapse of women’s food security."

(November 17, 2002—March 8, 2003), the Long Island Alliance for Peaceful Alternatives is declaring a Code Pink Alert on Friday, March 7th.  "On March 7, Long Islanders will drop off pink slips or fax them to congressional offices on Long Island, expressing their opposition to a preemptive war against Iraq. A war that is morally indefensible, that violates international law, and that lacks broad global or UN support," says O'Handley.  "Long Islanders and the Long Island Alliance for Peaceful Alternatives, along with New York City and national organizations, will continue to demonstrate against a war on Iraq. On March 15 we will join in the ‘March To Stop the War’ in Washington D.C. We will also be part of an antiwar march in NYC on March 22.  "At the same time, vigils at congressional offices, campus speak-outs, and other local actions will continue as we work to stop this war. More than 80% of the world’s people, and most Americans, do not want this war."

2. March 8 Raelian Women will join the march for Peace in Los Angeles made up of a human rainbow of races, nationalities, spiritual preferences, embracing all differences to give Peace a chance.  At the end of the march (see locations below) the raelian women and men will disrobe "to the bare extent of the law", with great religiosity, to the intermittent sound of a Tibetan bell.  The words of a universal prayer will then be read and all  will stand in a warm circle of Love and Hope with only their Bare Femininity (found in both men and women) to transform war instincts into peaceful, happy, life bearing thoughts to ensure our planet’s future. Come and join this Circle of Love!

1. Solomon Islands National Council of Women - For the last two years Solomon Islands women celebrated under the theme TOTAL DISARMAMENT. We continue to face armed conflict related issues everyday and corruption in the government leadership. This year we would still like to bring forward this message to our men that it is time to stop the killing, the rape and the corruption. Recently last week our former Commissioner for Police Sir Fredrick Soaki was assassinated on his tour to Malaita with the UNDP Demobilisation team. Sir Fred is a state man, he was the first indigenous Police Commissioner for Solomon Islands, he died when working for Peace.  Solomon Islands our concerns surround peace and security issues and national unity. Saturday March 8 Sonoma County Women for Peace are organizing events in solidarity with the International Women's Strike on International Women's Day.  In the evening of March 8, we will join with women from other counties possibly on the Marin headlands, or on Mt. Tamalpais, or elsewhere that is clearly visible from the air, from the highways, from the city of San Francisco and possibly even the Golden Gate Bridge. We will form a huge, illuminated peace symbol by standing with strong, bright, flashlights. The original intent was to have enough women and strong lights to be seen from a satellite photo - to be seen from space literally as Women Making Peace On Earth. Even if we cannot achieve the satellite photo we will arrange aerial photos to be taken and press to cover the event.  We are asking for the participation of all women and for you to help us please pass the word about this powerful women's action. INTERNATIONAL WOMEN'S DAY: WOMEN ASYLUM SEEKERS IN BRITAIN with Roya Ebrahimi and Julie Cornes (tbc) The talk will focus on the impact of the new Nationality, Immigration and Asylum Act 2002 on employment, training and education of women asylum seekers in Britain. The speakers will illustrate how the latest changes have effectively taken away the permission to work from asylum seekers and how this will further impact their access to vocational training. Roya Ebrahimi will also talk about how a stigmatising media and press coverage on asylum seekers has affected the employment opportunities for those who already hold a work permit.

On International Women's Day, 8 March, the Palestine Solidarity Campaign is asking you to protest at the plight of Palestinian women detained in Israeli jails for resisting the occupation of their homeland. Sixty Palestinian women, some less than eighteen years of age, are being held in Israeli prisons in degrading and dangerous circumstances. Many of the women are held in solitary confinement, isolated and deprived of communication with their families and denied medical treatment. They have been subjected to degrading body searches, in contravention of international law. Many have been sexually harassed and abused by Israeli guards and criminal prisoners with whom they are forced to associate with during recess time. Some of the women have been subjected to severe beatings by Israeli interrogators. Amna Mona and Swas Turki were admitted to Abu Kbir Hospital for medical treatment as a result of beatings. Lawyers for the Palestinian human rights group LAW have reported observing chain marks on the legs and arms of female political detainees. Women interviewed gave statements about the systematic use of torture and degradation to which they had been subjected. This includes being chained for hours, denied access to toilets, beatings and lack of clean drinking water. Israel's treatment of female Palestinian political prisoners highlights, once again, its illegal and barbaric attitude towards Palestinians and its contempt for international law.
