Big Turn-Out Expected For "Save Bridlington Hospital"

Thousands of Bridlington residents are expected to march through the town tomorrow, Saturday, July 26, to save their hospital.

The trade union Unite is calling on its members throughout the North East to turn out in strength to protest at the actions of the Scarborough and North East Yorkshire Healthcare NHS trust.

Unite and Save Bridlington Hospital Campaign Action Group are protesting at proposals by the Trust to close the cardiac monitoring unit and two acute medical wards at Bridlington Hospital.

The Independent Reconfiguration Panel (IRP) is due to make its report to Health Secretary Alan Johnson on July 31 into the trust’s closure proposals, and the march will make the point that any decision to cut back on the health services that the Hospital provides will be unacceptable. The IRP was established in 2003 to provide advice to the Secretary of State for Health on contested proposals for health service change in England. The Department of Health makes the point that the IRP will give "appropriate support and advice" to the people charged with the task of "modernising" the NHS at local level.

Unite National Officer for Health, Dave Fleming, referring to an atmosphere of crisis at the hospital, said that this is a "dreadful indictment of the frightful management that has brought a fine hospital run by excellent staff to the point of collapse".

The crises referred to include:

• plans to employ 17 new finance staff at a cost of £450,000, at a time when a recruitment freeze was in place;
• the sudden resignation of the trust’s chief executive, Iain McInnes and other top managers last month.
