Kwangju People's Uprising Belongs to All Humanity!

May 18, 2009, marked the 29th anniversary of the heroic Kwangju People's Uprising which took place in the city of Kwangju, south Korea from May 18-28, 1980. In those ten days the students, workers, women and youth -- people of all walks of life -- took over the city and held it by force of arms against the military dictatorship of General Chun Doo-hwan, who had come to power through a US-engineered military coup that overthrew the 3-month-old government of President Choi Kyu-hah. The significance of the Kwangju People's Uprising was that it delivered a decisive blow to US imperialism and its subjugation and oppression of the Korean people since forcefully dividing the country in two following the end of the Second World War. The Kwangju People's Uprising also symbolised the determination of the south Korean people to resist US domination of south Korea which goes on to this day and gave impetus to their collective struggle for self-determination, democracy, independence and the reunification of their dismembered country. Last but not least, the Kwangju People's Uprising also serves to inspire all humanity that is joined in struggle to rid the world of Anglo-American imperialism, the scourge of the world's people, and to build a modern world free of wars of aggression and oppression.

The legacy of the Kwangju People's Uprising finds expression today in the collective actions of the south Korean citizens who are waging a determined struggle against the US-installed puppet government of Lee Myung Bak, a government of national betrayal which has done much damage to the honour and dignity of the Korean nation which stands second to none in contributing to the progress of humanity.

On the occasion of the 29th Anniversary of the Kwangju People's Uprising we call on the working class and people to step up their support for the heroic Korean people in their just struggle against US military occupation and to rid their country of US imperialist domination so that they can achieve their over 60-year struggle for the independent and peaceful reunification of their divided country.

Hail the 29th Anniversary of the Heroic Kwangju People's Uprising!

Heroic Resistance Inscribed in History of Independence

By Ra Sol Ha

Though much water has flown under the bridge since the heroic Kwangju popular uprising of the south Korean people, the spirit and noble soul of the participants in the righteous uprising who fought courageously braving death live on and are powerfully inspiring the south Korean people in their dynamic struggle for independence against the US, democracy against dictatorship and for national reunification.

The Kwangju popular uprising was a just resistance against the US and fascism as its participants fought for national sovereignty, social democracy and the reunification of the country against the fascist rule of the US imperialists and the south Korean military gangsters and, at the same time, a massive armed uprising whose participants stood up in a do-or-die spirit against the merciless armed suppression by the dictatorial power.

The uprising taught a bitter lesson that the US imperialists are not the "protectors" and "friends" of the south Korean people but the violators of sovereignty and democracy, ferocious aggressors and man-killers and it is quite impossible to achieve the independent development and progress of the society, national unity and reunification as long as such gang of robbers are allowed to go scot-free, and once a struggle is launched, it should be carried on dynamically to its victory and only by doing so is it possible to win a final victory.

None of the desires of the resistance fighters in those days, i.e. an independent, democratic new society and national reunification, has come true up to this date.

The national dignity and sovereignty of the south Korean people are trampled down, democracy and human rights wantonly violated still today due to outsiders and traitors just as happened 29 years back.

The people from all walks of life in south Korea should intensify the struggle for independence against the US, the struggle for driving the US imperialist aggressor troops out of south Korea, and disclose and condemn and thoroughly foil the moves of the group of traitors to increasingly depend on foreign forces in a bid to sacrifice the national interests to serve them.

It is a law of history that justice is sure to win and no force on earth can hold in check the south Korean people’s righteous struggle for independence, democracy and reunification.

Protests against Puppet Lee Myung Bak Traitors in South Korea

People from many walks of life undertook actions in Kwangju, south Korea, on May 17 to condemn traitor Lee Myung Bak for his crimes committed against the nation, people and reunification on the occasion of the 29th anniversary of the May 18 Kwangju people’s uprising.

A rally was held in the area of Kumnam Street by members of civic and public organisations including the Solidarity for Progress, the Kwangju and South Jolla Provincial Solidarity for Progress, the Confederation of Trade Unions, the Federation of Peasants Associations and the Association for Supporting Prisoners of Conscience of the Family Movement for Realising Democracy.

Prior to the rally, students staged an art performance representing the struggle of the participants in the May 18 Kwangju uprising.

On May 18 in the city of Kwangju, a large demonstration called for the independent reunification of the Korean Peninsula, put an end to suppression under the pretext of "security" and demand the resignation of the Lee Myung Bak regime.

More than 10,000 workers from different parts of south Korea held a rally in Taejon on May 16 denouncing the Lee Myung Bak group of traitors for its unjust labour policy on the occasion of the 29th anniversary of the Kwangju uprising.

Speakers at the rally declared they could never forget the desire of the participants in the May 18 uprising brutally killed by the fascist military dictators 29 years ago.
